Conceived in collaboration with other bassoonists around the world, Heckeldex began development in the fall of 2020. Among other things, the history of the modern bassoon has been described as “shrouded in misinformation” by notable music historians. Bassoonist Avery Dabe set out to change that with the release of Heckeldex on July 26th, 2021. Since then, Heckeldex has continued to evolve and gain more prevalence throughout the bassoon community.
The startup of Heckeldex.org would not have been possible without…

- Information and concept idea from Mike Frederick's original Heckel photo gallery, heckelbassoons.info

- Serial number sourcing from Edith Reiter’s “Wilhelm Heckel, Six Generations Dedicated To Music” (CPI Books, GmbH)

- Original website design and startup from programmer Camden Spehl.

- Technical revision and 2023 updates from Drew Dabe.

- Support and funding from studies with Mike Harley.

- Inspiration from James Kopp’s “The Bassoon” (Yale University Press, 2012) and Edith Reiter’s “Wilhelm Heckel, Six Generations Dedicated To Music” (CPI Books, GmbH)
